Chapter Twenty-four

Zoe paced in front of the fireplace, feeling just as cold and hollow as the empty hearth. She checked her watch and bit at a nail. Riley had been checking on the power for fifteen minutes now and she could no longer hear her moving around in the basement. Nerves on edge, she walked to the stairs that led down below and waited, listening for a sound.

“Riley? You down there?”

She strained to hear an answer, but there was none. Her heart careened in her chest. Where was she? What could she possibly be doing?

“Riley?”

She gave up and paced near the kitchen. A corner curio cabinet caught her eye behind the kitchen table. She hadn’t paid it or its contents much mind before, but now she saw something that interested her. She crossed to it and opened the glass front door. Then she stood on her tiptoes and reached up for what she was after. She touched the cold metal with her fingertips and easily pulled the item from its stand. She brought it down in front of her and held it with both hands. Her breath quickened as she stared at the revolver.

“Careful,” Riley said from behind, startling her. “She’s old but she still works.”

“Sorry, I—where have you been?”

Riley walked toward her in her stocking feet, carrying her boots in her hand. She deposited them by the back door and slid out of her coat.

“I went outside to have a look around.”

“Alone?”

Riley gently took the gun. “Yes, alone,” she said softly. “And I came back safely, so we won’t be needing this.” She put the gun back on its stand and closed the cabinet. “And you’ll be glad to know I found nothing suspicious.”

“Nothing?”

Riley held her hands. “Nothing. Just the howling wind and the blowing snow.”

“What about the power?” Riley’s words should have comforted her but they didn’t.

Riley scratched her head. “That I can’t figure out. Must be a line down somewhere from the storm.”

Zoe walked away from her and hugged herself against the chill that had just swept over her.

It could still be him. He could’ve found her. How, she didn’t know. But then again how had he done any of what he’d done thus far? He seemed to be able to do anything.

“It’s nothing, Zoe, honestly.”

“You don’t know,” Zoe said. “You don’t know.”

“I do know. It’s just an outage from the storm. It happens all the time.”

Zoe looked at her. “But you’ve even said yourself you’ve never been here in the snow before. So how would you know?”

Riley opened her mouth to speak but then seemed to change her mind. “I just know, okay? It’s common sense when these kind of things are concerned.” She held her hands. “Now why don’t you come sit down and I’ll get the fire going and get us something to eat?”

“How? We have no power.”

“I’m pretty resourceful.”

“What about the generator?”

“I think we should wait and use it at night. I’m not sure how long we’ll need it for and I only have so much fuel.
